What A Great Year Of Football
Well, the regular NFL season is over, and it was an exciting one. Several of my expectations were left in the dust. I had the Philadelphia Eagles going to the Superbowl, and thought the Colts would still be a contender even without Peyton Manning. Looking forward to post season, and watching those helmets smash into each other, driving their way to the Superbowl. This is definitely the most exciting part of the football season for me!
Here’s a few great resources for you football lovers! These are on my RSS feed, and I check them daily.
Microwaving A Football Helmet?
Now this is bizarre… but very interesting. I thought it was worth sharing. There’s a whole video series on Youtube that shows what things look like being microwaved. I watched the whole video and just kept waiting for something to explode. Very odd ending.
Enjoy!

How A Football Helmet Is Made
It’s always fascinating to see how products are mass produced. This is a good video about the making of the football helmets, on a large scale, from Riddell. It’s amazing to see the individual labor and the mass assembly lines these helmets get, including computer tests to make sure that the helmets are the expected quality. Enjoy. Pieces transcribed below for quick reading.
In a game of tackles and tumbles, a helmet is essential equipment. To make one, plastic pellets are suctioned into a machine then molded into a dome shape. This dome device shapes them into a shell, which hardens in a matter of seconds. A robot then collects it.
The shell is put into position for trimming, and the extra molding is cut off.
Next, a robot drills up to 9 holes into the shell. The holes will be used to attached a liner, facemask, and various pieces of hardware. This machine performs all the drilling in 30 seconds. It’s the ultimate in computerized precisions. A worker collects the drilled shell and puts a new one in position for the robot.
The outside of the helmet shell is ruffed up with an orbital sander, which preps it for priming and painting. They use a high grade coat of automotive paint, and cure in the open air for 18 hours.
Football Helmet Fit
This site is designed for the football player to start their search for the best football helmet at the lowest price. The helmet is more than just protective gear. As a football player, it’s your confidence and depending on your playing style, your weapon. I hope you enjoy this content and get the education you need to make the right choice.
I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of the old style leather football helmets. Now, they’re a thing of the past and really only good as halloween costumes. With today’s style of football play, I couldn’t imagine anything more dangerous than these. Not only because they’re soft, but because they weren’t supportive. Your head would flip around wildly, and you’d be at risk for serious neck injury. They were’nt tight. The biggest thing about today’s helmets – or any football gear whatsoever – is “tight”. You want your helmet to fit as tightly as it possibly can. Any kind of play in the helmet is what’s going to cause concussions. If you have shake in the helmet and you make contact with another player, the helmet is what’s actually hurting your son instead of protecting him. So when your kid takes his helmet off and you see red dots from where the helmet is squeezing his head, that’s actually a good thing (though it can be too tight if he’s getting headaches).
When looking to buy football helmets, make sure they fits without jaw pads. Jaw pads – often times called ear pads – are going to keep the helmet from rocking side to side. Cheaper football helmets don’t have durable jaw pads, or they’re too soft. One of the qualities you want to check before plunking down your money on a cheap helmet is whether or not it’s constructed cheaply. This is one way you can tell. When you take off the jaw pads, see if the helmet has any shake forwards or backwards. If it does, it’s not the best fit for you. Next, you need to check out the chin strap. I recommend a hard cup chin strap, but you need to find one that best suits you. These are detachable and customizable. The key here again is tightness. If the football helmet is able to rock up and down with the chin strap on, you’re too loose.
New Technology In Football Helmets Detect Concussions
The University of Minnesota is on the cutting edge of technology, because this year they’re one of nine college football teams equipped with sensor-lined helmets designed to detect concussions. The way it works is there are six sensors on the inside, so if a player is playing on the field and gets hit hard enough it pages the medical team. They can evaluate if there’s a concussion, where it is on the helmet, and how bad it is.
It’s real time. It goes straight to the laptop, that goes straight to the beeper, within a matter of 10 seconds. That’s quick enough time that you’ll be able to get a reading on what’s going on with the football player, and it tells you what jersey number, and how hard the hit is in G-force.
The helmet is made by Riddell.
Cheap Football Facemasks
Facemasks come in many different colors, shapes and styles. They are protection. But it’s also your armor. It’s like a medieval knight picking his mask. It makes you feel like the machine you want to be. You shop for footballfacemasks judiciously, and maybe you actually own a few varieties.
In reality, any facemask sold on the market today has to pass rigorous requirements. They’re all safe. Finding a cheap one, in my opinion, is as effective as the most expensive one. For me, facemasks are all about the character it brings your helmet.

Reconditioning Your Football Helmet
Football players in this contact sport always understand that serious injury is merely a huddle away. Fortunately, today’s player is the beneficiary of footballgear that is much better than the leather pads players wore on their head years ago. Thankfully our schools have resources to help minimize injuries. Giant strides in the development of safer equipment can be traced back to the epidemic of serious football injuries in the late 1960s. In 1968 alone, 32 footballfatalities were recorded in organized play and four in sandlot play. Head and spinal injuries were so prevalent that a bunch of school coaches and manufacturers combined to create a set of rules to ensure safer footballhelmets. This band of concerned coaches became known as the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE), thanks to the joint accommodations from the National Federation, the American College Health Association, and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. Shortly thereafter, football helmet reconditioners joined the NOCSAE to play a vital role in policy making.

Kid’s Football Helmets
When it gets into any kind of sports equipment, youth football helmets can get kind of complicated. Parents want to make sure their kids are safe and the helmet is fitted properly. Most veteran football players get their gear provided to them by the department they play for, so when your kid comes home with a helmet, how do you make sure they’re in the right helmet? As a parent myself, with a child playing intramural football, it’s a mix of excitement and fear watching him take hits on the field. Peace of mind comes knowing his equipment is put on right.
